or, if you feel that “illegal immigrants” shouldn’t be granted any rights whatsoever because after all, *they’re breaking the law by their very presence in the country*, then the correct key sequence would be “5-2-2” instead. 🙂

  2. Chel

Or if you feel that said folks in question are already present in California and driving AND will continue to be and if you’d rather the freeway be safer for them and whoever you happen to consider legal, documented, legitimate, bonna fide, red-blooded, native, chosen, homeland, super-special, Californians, push “5-2-1.”

If you feel that its all a big myth and that “undocumented residents” don’t actually exist in California, then you might as well push “5-2-2.”

What percentage of illegal immigrants carry insurance on the vehicles they are driving? I am not a big fan of providing more benefits to people that are intent on circumventing the established system. I am worried about the existance of these people on our roads and the consequences of one of them ramming into me.

  4. Chel

Well, I can answer your question, pmp, *NONE* of the “illegal immigrants” carry insurance on the vehicles that they drive. Why is this and how do I know it? Well, you have to have a liscensed driver in order to get car insurance. And currently, undocumented residents are not eligible for drivers liscense. Yet another reason why this legislation makes sense.

The way I have my insurance is… My friend is a lawful resident in the country and I am not…so the way to do it is… my friend owns the car and gets the insurance under his name… I drive it without a licence…I do not like it…please vote yes…thank you…adios.

  6. pmp

My question was rhetorical. I know that no truly illegal immigrant carries the requisite insurance. I also fear that after we provide this benefit/privledge, that rate is not likely to increase.

People come to this country illegally from poor latin american areas. They make next to no money. They probably could not afford the insurance if they went to get it. They send most of the money they make back to their families and often times are just here for seasonal work.

America needs to deal with the root of this problem (illegal immigration), not try to fix other ancillary issues (driving privledges).

How sad that so many Americans claim to be Christians and yet are SO un-godly. People are people, regardless of where they were born.

Who makes a human “illegal”? The answer, of course, is an EXTREMELY corrupt system that convinces the gullible it’s on our side, when in fact, it’s the epitome of the anti-Christ!

I don’t mean to trail off of the subject of giving drivers licenses to illegals. This state was built on it’s agriculture, and immagrents both legal and illegal are the number one work force contribution when it comes to ag. they also contribute in restaurants, doing yard work, cleaning houses, etc.

How could you ask these people who are doing the back braking jobs and getting paid so little that they can clean your house, and mow your lawn, and pick the fruit that YOU eat, BUT they can’t have a legal safe way to get to that job!

    Pmp:

My husband does not make “next to no money”, and he even drives better than me. He’s been here since age 7, and you wouldn’t even know he’s undocumented if you talked to him. We’ve filed papers already for him to become a resident. But we couldn’t hope for a license for a couple years. He, and others I know like him, would definitely get a license and insurance if they had the chance. So many problems could become if they got pulled over, and it is that fear every day that makes us wish SB 1160 would pass. Not all undocumenteds work here and send money to their families. I know about 30 of them who are trying to make it here and recycle their monies back into the community. If only my husband had a license, my stomach wouldn’t drop every time he calls me while he’s out, driving home or where ever he may be driving. His not having a license causes un-neccessary stress in our lives. I’m a citizen, and my husband and I will continue to live here forever, please CA, can he have a license to drive? He needs it. And, also, with SB 1160, I believe that the undoc. would need a US sponsor amongst other requirements. So if it passes, it won’t be all of the undocs anyway. The revised bill is fair to all, and will help keep us all safe in different ways.

I came to the US at the age of 1, So i can’t help being here, its not like i could have said, “Hey mom and dad, I don’t think we should be doing it like this” But they were ignorant/desperate, and i was… well, a baby. In my heart, I am american, I grew up here, i went to school here and learned all there is to be learned in order to function in this great country. But alas I can’t (legally) drive. I don’t think its fair to people like me, who can’t help being here, and have nothing to return to in their country of my origin (because i really dont).

I’m sure the state is trying it’s best to look out for the public’s best interest, and I can respect that, but with every action the government takes theres a reaction in both good and bad, if they don’t pass this law, then some people might retaliate, there WILL be more auto accidents. etc. If it does pass, then more people will probably be encouraged to come here. Its inevitable that either way the state is going to get something they don’t want. But i’d go for the safer driving enviroment. I’m sure what all this post contains can be debated, and some of it probably doesn’t make much sence, but i hope i get my basic idea across.

    Thanks for hearing me out.

  15. Anon-Dan

I just read through the rest of the posts,

It strikes me that most of the people that are agasint this legislation are probably ignorant and generally unaware of the motives of the avarage “illegal immigrant”

I’d also like to strongly agree with Nene.

    Interesting side note:

Colorado recently adopted a law that will make the California Drivers License – held by every LEGAL resident of California — INVALID as legal identification in that state if this measure passes. No doubt others will follow suit.

So you not only directly undermine the enforcement of our immigration laws with this measure, but you render the California drivers license now held by millions of Californians useless as valid identification and proof of legal residency.

  17. AF

You have to draw the line somewhere. First of all, giving liceses to non us residents is a huge security risk because we are giving a valid ID to someone we know nothing about. Second of all, why should CA give rights to a person who is not a US citizen? The bottom line is undocumented people are breaking the law by being here in the first place. If these people want to come to America so bad, they should do it legally by becoming a citizen first, and getting their license afterwards. I don’t respect people who cut in line by coming to America through the back door while the rest of the immigrants wait in line to come through the front door legally. We should not reward people who break the law.

It’s awfully hard to argue against a sob story. Unfortunately, people who make policy decisions need to sometimes make tough decisions.

If you give DLs to illegal aliens it will serve as a huge incentive for more illegal aliens to come here.

And, because of Motor Voter, it will lead to even more illegal aliens voting in our elections. Some might even assume that’s one of the reason some politicians favor 1160.

Those who still favor 1160 should spend a few minutes reading the various 9/11 Commission reports. They go into agonizing detail on how various terrorists have abused our immigration laws to enter and stay in the U.S. See, for instance, Chapter 3 of the staff report.

And, from Rep. Chris Cox (R-CA):

I work with someone whose sister was in a car accident with an undocumented, illegal alien. Not only did this person not have a driver’s license, he didn’t have the insurance that American born California citizens are required to have. What happened to my co-worker’s sister you ask? Well, her pelvis was shattered, her left femur was shattered. She sustained broken ribs and a punctured lung. She’s still trying to walk again without being in severe pain and has been forced into early retirement, because she can’t sit for long periods of time due to the pelvis. Another question. What happened to the person who hit her? Well, the undocumented, illegal alien, hasn’t had to pay a thing! Why? Because he’s in the country illegally and, as “pmp” put it, he’s sending all of his money back home to his family. Oh and one last thing, guess whose insurance went up after the accident………

  20. speedbump

I believe that car insurance is issued based on car registration, not on whether one has a drivers license or not. The debate can go on and on about where undocumented aliens’ money goes and how much of a problem undocumented auto accidents are (negligible compared to drunk driving) and whether legal residents would do the back breaking work that (some) undocuemted aliens do (my family that immigrated here legally worked out in the fields handpicking produce). But the bottomline is that undocumented aliens are in this state illegally, which means without rights. Including the right to have a drivers license. We can still empathize with their plight or fear that they may hit us with a car they are driving illegally. But giving them a drivers license will not fix the problem.

My children were born here,we’re completely alone and no means of becoming legal. There’s no family or any ties to go home too. what do I do?. What happens to my children if I take a chance and get into an accident, .Even a restricted licence is better than none ,for the purpose of allowing my american kids an education and some type of a better life, than I’v had for the last 15 years. What would have been the point of my sacrifice as a parent if it did’nt benefit my children,I’m left with no pride ,self esteem or dignity as a human, and seemingly in this situation no respect from my children since I am rendered ineffective as a parent. Some of us are willing to be subjected to the rigid screening and checks and whatevers ultimately because it would be great to have some sort of life, we’ve followed the laws of this great land because of what it meant to be here. Living without a driving licence is like living in jail being persecuted even though no crime was committed. help us out here throw us a bone.

I have lived here in the U.S. for most of my life. I am 26 yrs old, and now a “legal” resident of California. I have been a resident of the U.S. for at least 5 years. I now have a drivers license and insurance. I know that even if I wasn’t a “legal” resident of California I would still have to drive. To work, school, the doctor, the grocerie store, etc, etc. Not because I am a “criminal at heart” that likes breaking the law. It’s because driving in the U.S. is not a comodity. It is a necesity! It is just a part of our everyday life. On the U.S. currency, there reads a slogan: “IN GOD WE TRUST”. So where on the bible(the word of GOD) does it say that some men are born “Illegal” while others are the “legal” sons of GOD. Does it not say that we are all born equals under the eyes of GOD?? Maybe not. After all “GOD” is a “white man”, with a “white beard”, and a “white tunnic” sitting on a golden throne. So it will be a good idea that I keep my green card till the day I die. After all, it might be necesary. Even in the afterlife. -WINO

    selfish? selfish? selfish?

    yes yes yes

Many many people are against this law and to some point I understand them. There is a diffrence though between those who are against the law purily for racist motives and those who really are worried about the nation’s safety.

I believe most justify their hate and racism under the false pressumtion of the nations security. The bottom line is this, if you are truly a real Christian you cannot have or should not withhold hatred in your heart toward ANYONE no matter the race or the color. I am one that worries about this wonderful country and therefore am not against this law, on the contrary I realize that without those hard working people who are doing the hard labor no white or black man will ever do, we would not be the strongest economic nation in the world. Let’s face it, whether we like it or not if they left or we drove them off we would be doomed.
